“Summer Smarts” Summer Studies
at Duluth First UMC
This summer our Education Ministry is offering Summer Smarts, study opportunities to gain knowledge to feed your theological mind. If you did not grow up Methodist, or perhaps just missed out on a piece of crucial information about our denomination then two United Methodist Studies may be of interest to you. You may register for each class by calling the church office and speaking with our receptionist Tracy Brinker. Please let Tracy know if you would like us to order a book for you. We will post the location of the room prior to the class beginning.
Baptism – “By Water and the Spirit”:
Begins June 3rd
Brady Beard, a Candler Graduate student, will lead a study about the sacrament of baptism as understood in our United Methodist Church. The book is a resource to understanding between the baptismal covenant and daily discipleship. The cost of the book is $10 or also available on Amazon to download to your Kindle for $8. The class will meet on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. beginning on June 3rd and ending on June 24th. Please register by May 21st in order to have the books in time for the first class.
Holy Communion – “This Holy Mystery”:
Begins July 1st
Dr. David Daniel, Director of Music & Worship Arts, will lead a study about the sacrament of communion as understood in our United Methodist Church. Holy Communion is about realizing the presence of Christ in our lives for the gathered community and your personal call from Christ. The study will explore the mystery, the table servants, the table itself and the liturgy of the service. Join Dr. Daniel on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. beginning on July 1st and ending on August 5th. If you would like to order a book the cost is $13 or also available on Amazon to download to your Kindle for $10. Please register by June 18th in order to have the books in time for the first class.
These classes are open to anyone who would like to know more about our sacraments. You do not need to be a member of the church. Please invite your friends to join you, they may have questions about our beliefs and why we do the things we do in our denomination.
Another option for summer study is Paul’s Missionary Journey’s, which begins June 17th. Join Rev. C. Kay Fuino on select Sunday evenings in June and July for an overview of Paul and his missionary journeys. The class will cover the sequence of events in a historical text, and comparison of those events with other known events from relevant sources. The class will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 on June 17th, June 24th, July 1st, July 8th and conclude on July 22nd. There is no book required for the study other than a study Bible. Please register with Tracy Brinker for this class so we know how many handouts to create.
Please contact Rev. C. Kay Fuino by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 770-476-3776, ext. 117 if you have any questions.
